Tackling Dignity Offshore. Highlighting The Missing Piece of Offshore Welfare at WindEnergy 2026

Members of the Cargostore Worldwide team have been in Hamburg this week at WindEnergy, a major international event bringing together thousands of delegates from across the global onshore and offshore wind industry.

Not only did WindEnergy provide us with the perfect opportunity to showcase our range of containerised solutions for this growing energy sector, but our Global Business Development Manager, Ekaterina Burge, also took to the main stage to speak to delegates on the topic of “Dignity Offshore”, highlighting the role our LiftaLoo Welfare Unit is uniquely playing in supporting workers offshore.

The Challenge Facing Offshore Wind Maintenance Teams

We often highlight the offshore energy sector as a feat of modern engineering with massive wind turbines, complex platforms and thousands of skilled technicians working in often extreme environments, helping to generate renewable energy to meet growing global energy demands.

But while the sector is highly innovative when it comes to its high-tech infrastructure utilised to harness and generate that energy, the need for basic human welfare has been overlooked.

Because when nature calls when you are working out on a turbine or platform, technicians are often faced with unacceptable choices: endure an entire shift without being able to use the toilet, use a makeshift bag, or take a lengthy, hazardous ladder transfer back to a Crew Transfer Vessel (CTV).

And because calling for a CTV break over open radio can cause embarrassment, workers are known to engage in what effectively becomes voluntary dehydration; restricting food and water intake to avoid comfort breaks altogether.

And whilst this may solve one issue, as occupational health expert Dr. Amy Kingston points out, dehydration directly causes fatigue, headaches, heat exhaustion, and impaired cognitive performance. Long-term, it can lead to kidney stones, bladder dysfunction, and recurrent infections.

Any or all these symptoms creates heightened safety risks for workers already operating in hazardous environments.

For women working in these offshore environments, the lack of proper facilities and sanitary product disposal also adds increased risks of bacterial infections and skin irritation.

On shore workers or office staff would not be expected to work without basic facilities including hot water and a proper toilet and offshore crews deserve the same standards.
