What is a CCU?

A CCU stands for ‘Cargo Carrying Unit’ and is a term commonly used in offshore shipping to describe the special type of hard wearing shipping container that is used to take goods to offshore platforms.

These containers are required to be manufactured to a high standard and achieve a DNV 2.7-1 safety rating. This is so anyone using the container knows that it will withstand being banged against the side of ships or offshore platforms when it is being transfered from one offshore object (ie a ship) to another (ie an offshore oil rig or wind turbine generator platform).

It is for that reason that you will often see a shipping container being called a ‘DNV 20ft Closed CCU’ for example. The ‘DNV’ shows users the container is certified. ’20ft’ shows the size, ‘closed’ shows what type of container it is, and ‘CCU’ refers to it being for offshore use.
